A wedding without the hassle

Sure, weddings are fun and all, but when you factor in slim pickings on the registry, your wacky uncle and sitting in uncomfortable church pews for an hour-long ceremony, you’ll soon be wishing you were at another party. The clever folks at the musical group Performers Who Care came up with a fundraising idea that addresses these concerns. It’s called the Unwedding.

Among other things, the group points out that this is the perfect opportunity to wear that bridesmaid dress again. You know, the satin fuchsia number you spent $200 on? (Bitter bridesmaid here . . .)

The money raised at the event will go to the Lend Me a Hand Fund, which the group set up at the Payson Center For Cancer Care. In fact, a portion of all of the group’s performances go to the fund, which helps families pay for out-of-pocket expenses while receiving cancer treatments.

Group members Cate Weir, Gerri King, Jane Skoog, Teresa Speigel and Lynn Stanley will be your Unwedding hostesses on March 20 at 8 p.m. at the Grappone Center.

Lynn took a few minutes to answer some of our questions about the event:

The “unwedding” concept is unique. Which came first: the idea or someone with a closet full of old bridesmaids dresses?
Weddings are beautiful, the reception is really fun. We wanted to have all those great things that come with a wedding reception – the friends, music, dancing, and food, without having to wait for someone else to get married, or having a seating chart.

What’s on the menu? Are food and drink included in the ticket price?
Great hot and cold hors d’oeuvres – that is included in the ticket price. There will also be a cash bar.

Can guests request the chicken dance or is that on the no-play list?
Very funny – I had never heard of the chicken dance until my little nieces requested it at my own wedding! I guess we will just have to see.

Why should people come out and support this cause?
The Lend Me a Hand Fund helps people who are going through cancer treatments with out-of-pocket expenses. When people have to miss work or stop working altogether in order to get well, having some basic necessities taken care of can relieve some of their burden.

Is there anything else you’d like to let people know about?
The more people who join us, the more we can pass along to the Lend Me a Hand Fund. This is a great opportunity to get out, be with friends, dress up (though dressing up is not mandatory!), dance and have a fun time, all while supporting a worthy cause.

The cost is $25 in advance, $30 at the door. For tickets and more information, call 753-9526.
