Winter rules!
If you play outside

According to our benevolent City Manager, Thomas Aspell, here’s what you can do to avoid cabin fever:

  • Cross-country skiing: Groomed trails are now available for use at Beaver Meadow Golf Course, Aspell says.
The golf course staff has been busy grooming more than five kilometers of trails throughout the golf course for the public to enjoy.
The terrain varies from flat traverses to some quick downhill runs. (Ed. – woohoo. Take that, Pats Peak!) Patrons are asked to stay on the groomed trails and keep pets off the trails for the enjoyment of all. Sorry, Sparky.
  • Skating: White Park Pond has been open for skating since Jan. 2. So get over there!
The hockey rink is also ready for use, Aspell says. And, he adds: “Staff hopes to have the new skating area at Merrill Park available early this week or sooner if Mother Nature continues to cooperate.”
Skaters are asked to stay off the pond at Merrill Park, which has become too unstable to maintain as a skating area.

    O Tannenbaum,
    We’re sick of you!

Listen up, Concord: Do not put that tree in the trash!

Says Aspell: Residents may take trees to the Beaver Meadow Golf Course, the transfer station on Old Turnpike Road or White Farm on Clinton Street.

This service will be available thru Saturday, Jan. 31. All deposited trees will be chipped into mulch.

    Go fire department!
    New stuff

Says Aspell: The Concord Fire Department began using a new device last week to improve the chances of survival for victims of cardiac arrest.

The small plastic device is used during CPR to regulate the pressure in a patient’s airway from rescue breathing, Aspell says.

This doubles the blood flow to the heart and increases blood flow to the brain by 50 percent.

    Wastewater news!
    Grit gets upgrade

Says Aspell: “Penta Corporation is nearing 50 percent completion on the construction of the Hall Street grit system improvements.”

Okay, let’s get this straight. Grit system improvements? Waste water?

Eew. We can stop here. No further explanation necessary.

Aspell continues: The first new grit separation process was placed in service last week, and final adjustments are being made prior to initiation of demolition on the remaining original grit processing equipment.

Even more exciting: “In preparation for some concrete repair and coating work in the influent channel, Penta has installed a temporary bypass pumping system. This system operate for a two-week period while the concrete repairs are completed.”
