Throughout the summer and early fall, students from The Wediko School in Windsor have been digging in, giving back, and discovering new flavors while volunteering with a local food-growing initiative through the Kearsarge Food Hub in Bradford.
Working side by side with staff, Wediko students have contributed more than 40 volunteer hours, planting and harvesting an impressive variety of fresh vegetables from the Seed to Table garden plot located at Kearsarge Community Common in Sutton. The produce they harvest does more than fill a basket; it helps fill tables throughout the community. All the vegetables harvested by the students are donated to the Kearsarge Food Hub’s “FREEdge,” a free community refrigerator and food pantry that provides fresh, healthy food to neighbors in need.
These weekly volunteer trips have provided a meaningful opportunity for students to connect with nature, develop new skills, try new foods, and contribute to their local community. Through their time and effort, Wediko students have helped put fresh, locally grown food into the hands of neighbors who can benefit from it—demonstrating how a few hours of work in a garden can grow into something that nourishes an entire community. Below I have included some photos from past weeks.
The Wediko School is a program of The Home for Little Wanderers. The school is a residential treatment center offering therapeutic and educational services for middle- and high-school-aged boys experiencing significant social-emotional, behavioral, and educational challenges.
