New Hampshire author, playwright and Manchester State Representative David J.
Preece will be the featured guest on the August 31 at 8 a.m. episode of What’s Your Story? on WNHN, 94.7 FM, and repeated September 6 at noon. The interview will stream concurrently at www.wnhnfm.org/now-playing.

During his conversation with co-hosts Fred Richards and Cary Gladstone, Preece discusses the inspiration behind the popular Mr. Higgins children’s book series, co-written with Jim Webber. The books follow the adventures of an endearing Scottish terrier whose experiences encourage young readers to practice kindness, stand up for others, and treat every person — and every living animal — with compassion.

“Mr. Higgins is more than a beloved family pet,” Preece said. “Through his adventures, Jim and I hope to help children understand the importance of empathy, friendship and the Golden Rule — treating others as they would want to be treated.”]

The co-authors’ four published books in the series are:

  • “A Home for Mr. Higgins”
  • “Mr. Higgins Takes a Stand”
  • “Mr. Higgins to the Rescue”
  • “Mr. Higgins Comforts a Family”

Each story addresses an important emotional or social challenge through the reassuring presence of Mr. Higgins. The books explore themes that include finding a home, confronting bullying, helping someone in danger, and comforting a family experiencing grief and loss.

Preece’s appearance on What’s Your Story? also explores how his experiences as a storyteller, community planner and public servant have influenced his writing. At the heart of the series is his belief that children’s stories can entertain young readers while helping them become more thoughtful, courageous and compassionate human beings.
