This week’s artist spotlight, brought to you through a collaboration with the Concord Insider and the Concord Arts Market, focuses on Kate McGuire, who lives in Dunbarton.

McGuire makes hand-painted and woodburned jewelry.

“My pieces are one-of-a-kind handmade, with Balsa wood to ensure a weightless feeling,” she said. “I love creating fun accent accessories for all ages of women to enjoy!”

Concord Insider: What does art mean to you?

Kate McGuire: Art to me is a sense of freedom and a wonderful outlet. It’s a great way to express your feelings without saying anything. There is no right or wrong in art and that’s what makes it beautiful!

CI: Where do you find inspiration?

KM: I often find my inspiration through everyday life. I could be going to a cafe to grab a coffee, and have someone in front of me wearing a magnificent color combination that gets my wheels turning for my next design.

CI: What does your creative process look like?

KM: Most of the time I will have an idea of colors that I’m in the mood to use. I then pull those bottles of paint and place them next to one another on my art table. I will start my design with those colors and sometimes add a few more. All of my jewelry is very unique, and different in its own way. I like creating various styles so there is something for everyone.

CI: What advice do you have for aspiring artists?

KM: Some days you can try to create an idea, and if it’s not coming out the way you visualized it, just take a day or week from working on it. I’ve learned that I really have to be in the mood, and when I am my creativity flows so much smoother.
