The Wilmot Historical Societyโs annual meeting on Sunday, Nov. 9 will feature a presentation on noted Black ventriloquist and magician Richard Potter, who was the most popular entertainer in America 200 years ago.
Potter lived with his family in Andover in the village named for him, Potter Place. From there, he traveled the entire country and beyond, filling both the largest city concert halls and ordinary tavern โlong roomsโ along his way.
Local author John Hodgson will speak on his book โRichard Potter: Americaโs First Black Celebrityโ and will share new discoveries he has made since its publication in 2018.
The historical societyโs brief annual meeting will begin at 2 p.m., followed by the presentation. Bylaw changes will be considered at the meeting.
The event will be at the newly restored Wilmot Town Hall at 9 North Wilmot Road. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. for refreshments and conversation.
