Science fiction at Discovery Center
This summer, the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center has lined up special staff picks for its Super Stellar Sci-Fi Series
On Friday night at 7 p.m., the center will feature Pacific Rim, a movie about an epic battle between sea monsters and humankind.
The following two movies at Super Stellar Fridays will be Galaxy Quest on Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. and 2001: A Space Odyssey on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.
Doors open on the first Friday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Visitors can enjoy the sci-fi feature at 7, and then check out the exhibit galleries, including the special summer exhibition, “Take Flight,” after the movie. All-inclusive price is $10 for adults, $9 for students and seniors, $7 for children and free for members.
Provided the skies are clear, members of the N.H. Astronomical Society will be outside the Discovery Center with their telescopes, sharing the wonders of the night sky for free with visitors.

Free Parks and Rec summer activities
To celebrate Parks and Recreation month (July), Concord Parks and Recreation is offering free activities.
On Friday, there will be a tennis clinic from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Field, where you can enjoy an evening of skills work and drills. You can play King of the Court or even try match play.
On July 11, take part in old-school rec at Merrill Park from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Play four-square, kick ball, capture the flag and hopscotch, and then cool off with a Kona Ice to end the night.

Annual meeting at Audi on Sunday
On Sunday, the Friends of The Audi will wind up the 2016-17 season at the Concord City Auditorium with a review of the past year and a kickstart to the upcoming 2017-18 programming.
At 4 p.m., Concord Community Concert Association’s annual meeting closes its 86th season and heads into its most exciting schedule ever with five concerts plus reviving a great Concord tradition – a family musical on Thanksgiving weekend with a Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol – the musical mystery story. The production, created and directed by Joel Mercier, was a highlight of the 2010 Audi season, and the CCCA and New Hampshire Theatre Factory will bring back an updated show to start this holiday season. At 6 p.m., the Friends of The Audi will host a true pot luck supper where everyone is welcome and can bring whatever dish you wish.
The Friends of The Audi’s annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. celebrates the past season’s achievements, including the five-month seat restoration project. Plus the Friend of the Year, Golden Pineapple and Business Supporter Awards will be given out to recognize special contributions to our community stage.

Make your own trail mix July 12
Local Baskit is hosting its second Wellness Wednesday of the summer on July 12.
Join Sarah Schmidt to learn some fun and easy ways to upgrade your food and your health this summer.
Make your own trail mix is the theme for next Wednesday’s event at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $8 per person.
The final Wellness Wednesday will be held Aug. 9, featuring summer smoothies. That class is free.

Science camps at Discovery Center
The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is offering seven week-long science and engineering camps this summer, for kids ages 5 to 14. The first camp, Engineering Extravaganza, is already in session, but there are six more to choose from.
The week of July 10-14, kids ages 5 to 7 have a choice of two camps: Solar System Space Explorers from 9 a.m. to noon and Junior Flyers, 1 to 4 p.m.
July 17-21, kids ages 10 to 14 can spend from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. engaged in Robots!, learning to code and program Lego Mindstorms robots.
Rocketry is the theme July 24-28, with the Discovery Center’s 3-2-1 Blast Off! camp for 8- to 12-year-olds from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
8- to 12-year-olds will also enjoy Sun and Stars, an astronomy camp July 31 to Aug. 4, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The camp season wraps up with Destination: Earth, a summer camp focused on Earth science for 10- to 14-year-olds, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
All camps are held Monday through Friday.

The Discovery Center is open from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week through Labor Day (except the day this paper comes out), plus the first Friday night each month from 6:30 to 9:30.

Painting workshop at Grace Episcopal
Master iconographer Marina Forbes will offer a one-day studio hands-on icon painting workshop, “The Art of Icon Painting: St. George Slaying the Dragon” in Concord on July 15 from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church (30 Eastman St.)
It is a seven-hour painting workshop for students who would like to start and finish their icon of St. George Slaying the Dragon in one day.
It is a hands-on experience for students interested in exploring the basics of traditional icon painting, one of the world’s oldest and most respected forms of religious art.
The program will include a demonstration of traditional materials and methods of icon making. Then, under the direction of the instructor, students will create their own icons using a combination of traditional and contemporary materials and methods.
Students will learn about board and painting surface preparation, gessoing, image rendering, pigments, brush stroke techniques, detailing, highlighting, gilding, Old Slavonic lettering and varnishing.
No painting experience is required for this class. Experienced artists will also feel comfortable learning different painting techniques.
All the materials will be provided.

Hospital receives recent donation
The Northeast Delta Dental Foundation recently awarded a $10,000 grant to Concord Hospital as part of its ongoing commitment to help address oral health access issues. As part of the Benefactors Circle, Northeast Delta Dental has made a significant investment to foster a partnership which strengthens the hospital’s services and programs.
This gift helps Concord Hospital Family Health Center Dental Clinic purchase needed dental and denture supplies.
The Dental Clinic provides a full range of dental care for teens and adults that are low-income, uninsured or Medicaid insured and cannot receive dental care in a private practice. In 2016, the Dental Clinic cared for 772 patients.
Northeast Delta Dental administers dental benefits to more than 853,000 people in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, offering dental insurance programs for organizations of all sizes and individuals and families with no access to employer-sponsored dental benefits.
