Isn’t it about time you learn to square dance?

If you couldn’t tell just by looking at us, we’re not what you’d consider the dancing type.

Sure, we’ve been known to cut a rug at a wedding or two over the years, but it’s usually after a couple adult beverages and likely not very good.

But hey, we haven’t taken any professional training either – although we have a way that you can. If you’re interested in the art of square dancing, the Concord Coach Square Dance Club is offering a beginners square dance class starting next Wednesday, Sept. 14.

It goes for 12 weeks and is followed by another 12-week class, if you’re so inclined to continue. The great part is that if you’re unsure about square dancing or don’t know much about it, you can attend the first two classes for free with no strings attached.

“After the first week, you’ll get a good flavor if it’s something you want to do,” said club president Ron Turcotte.

If you enjoy it and realize that being a square dance master has always been your dream, it’s only $50 for the remaining 10 weeks. That’s only $5 for an hour class each week.

“We’re there to have fun,” Turcotte said. “We’ll take anybody and everybody.”

The classes are held each Wednesday through Dec. 7 at the West Congregational Church hall, 499 N. State St.

Starting Oct. 1, the club will host a square dance at the Howard Recreation Center at State Office Park South (99 Pleasant St.) the first Saturday of the month, with the exception of January. But who wants to think about January right now?

“Anybody is always welcome to come to our dances and see what we’re all about,” Turcotte said.

There are 68 calls to learn in square dancing, and you won’t learn them all in one week, five weeks or likely 12. But you will have a good grasp on what it’s all about and will definitely be able to take part in one of the monthly dances.

There’s no experience necessary, and classes are open to singles, couples and families. Wear casual clothing and soft soled shoes.

“We have people of all ages that dance with us,” Turcotte said.

“Come on and give it a try,” Turcotte said.
