City Briefly

Last week, City Manager Tom Aspell decided he wanted to become the first Concord City Manager in Space, so he spent many hours researching outer space at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discover Center in hopes the program would one day be created. Luckily, Aspell also had time to write his weekly city memo for the good people of Concord, which we decided to print a portion of.

That sounds expensive

Water main breaks

An early morning water main break closed Court Street last Thursday.

The Concord General Services water crew isolated the leak, excavated the area, and made necessary repairs to the six-inch cast iron water main, which dated back to 1908, Aspell writes.

That sounds like something that probably needed a little TLC, but at least it didn’t happen in the middle of the night when it was zero degrees out.

Water service was restored to the 17 affected customers, including the Merrimack County Courthouse, around 5 p.m., filling the trench around 6 p.m., Aspell writes.

Talk about being one of the lucky ones.

Class is in session

It’s all about the water

The Water Treatment Plant has been hosting weekly NH Water Works Association (NHWWA) drinking water system operator basics classes for NHWWA members to learn about water treatment practices. These classes teach new water industry employees about water chemistry, system hydraulics, pumping, regulatory requirements, etc.

Hosting this at the Water Treatment Plant allows the class to have a more hands-on experience, Aspell writes.

No word if there’s any type of slip and slide activities going onw

Operators are required to have fundamental knowledge of these topics to pass an exam and become certified through the State of N.H. This educational opportunity is a great benefit to our water industry and the city is happy to be a part of it
