The United Way guide to gifts and giving

The thought of battling holiday crowds during the upcoming shopping season can be daunting, but it’s nowhere near as daunting as the realization that you can’t be part of that crowd at all.  There are many in our community who are dealing with that very dilemma right now, but we can rally together and help them out. There’s never a bad time to volunteer or give, but it’s particularly important during the holidays.

That’s why every year at this time for the last eight years, the Insider has teamed up with Granite United Way in order to assist those in need during the holiday season. With the help of the United Way, we’ve put together this list of local food banks, nonprofits and other organizations that take donations for families or other inpiduals who could use a little assistance.

These organizations are looking for all kinds of stuff: food, gift cards, clothes, personal care items, toys and Christmas gifts – the list goes on (to the next several pages of the Insider, to be exact). Anything you give will make this a holiday to remember for someone.

“We are fortunate to have so many generous inpiduals and companies in Merrimack County. During the holidays we are even more humbled by the kindness of others,” said Val Guy, senior director regional impact for Granite United Way. “Granite United Way encourages you to consider giving or volunteering at one of the organizations listed on this page.  Your contribution, be it money or time, will make an impact that reaches far beyond the holiday season.”

Of course, this list is not all-encompassing.  If there is a group that you’d like to donate to that isn’t on this list, or if you’d like to volunteer or help out in any way at all, contact Granite United Way’s Val Guy at 224-2595 or val.guy@graniteuw.org.

Other Items: We need nonperishable food and personal hygiene (inpidually packaged soap bars, deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo) items to stock our shelves. All items must be in original packaging and outdated items cannot be accepted. During the holidays, children are home from school and miss their in-school nutritional breakfasts and/or lunches, so any non-perishable food suitable for families with children is appreciated. Money donations are also gladly accepted to take advantage of quantity purchases and sale prices.

Delivery Address: 30 Canal St., Penacook.

Deadline: Dec. 23.
