Bulletin Board: Bowls of Care event set for Sept. 26 at Audubon

Organizers are completing final preparations for Elder Services’ and ServiceLink’s first Bowls of Care Event, slated for Sept. 26th at 5:30 p.m. at the New Hampshire Audubon Society on Silk Farm Road.

“We want to raise awareness of the critical role that family caregivers play in our communities,” said Pam Jolivette, director of Elder Services. “Our keynote speaker; Dr. Dennis McCullough of Dartmouth’s Center for Aging and author of My Mother Your Mother, will provide a glimpse into the world of caregivers and their loved ones.”

All ticket holders will be treated to a handmade bowl crafted by local artisans to be filled with a variety of soups, salads, breads and desserts from generous community kitchens and restaurants. Peggo Horstmann Hodes will entertain and talk about “singing for my mother,” and there will be an auction of exceptional experiences and unique pottery. For more information and to purchase a ticket, please contact Nicole Finitsis, Senior Companions’ Program manager at nfinitsis@bm-cap.org. Tickets are $30 per person.

Caregiving is exploding. The number of caregivers has more than tripled over the past 15 years. Family caregiving is one of the most overlooked volunteer “social” services, and the economic value of family caregiving is tremendous. AARP estimated that in 2009, the unpaid contribution of family caregivers was $450 billion. If family caregivers were no longer available, the cost of caring for their loved ones would be staggering. The contributions of these family caregivers is remarkable. However, it often comes at an emotional and financial cost to them.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the most comprehensive sources of counseling and services for family caregiving in Merrimack County; Elder Services and ServiceLink.
