Dandy Gilver and the Proper Treatment of Bloodstains

Catriona McPherson

2011, 291 pages

Fiction

Set against the background of the general labor strike of 1926 in Great Britain, Dandy Gilver, a wealthy aristocrat and sometimes amateur sleuth, has been hired by Lollie Balfour, an upper-class Scottish woman who thinks her husband will try to kill her. To protect Lollie and investigate, Dandy must infiltrate the household as Lollie's lady's maid, after receiving a crash course from her own maid. The first night Dandy sleeps in her mistress's bedroom, and the next morning Mr. Balfour is found murdered in his bedroom. Still undercover, Dandy tries to help the police solve the murder. Did someone break in and kill him, or was it someone within the house? Of course Dandy helps solve the murder, but the fun is in getting to the solution.

If you enjoy Dorothy Sayers and Dorothy Parker or the character Maisie Dobbs, try this book set in a similar time period.
