City briefly

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell puts on his tuxedo, waltzes on stage and dances all French-like. Then he delivers a moving, heartfelt city memo – silently! We at the Insider all wait around for the DVD to come out, then we pause the title screens, transcribe them and print them here.

Safety first

Fire permits available

The Concord Fire Department is pleased to announce that it is now accepting fire prevention permit applications at fire headquarters (24 Horseshoe Lane), between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, Aspell writes. Types of permits issued include installation and modification of fire suppression and notification systems; storage of combustible/flammable liquids; installation of storage tanks; fireworks; blasting; and wood/pellet stove installations; as well as permits for foster care, rooming houses, residential placement, daycare facilities, and life safety inspections. The code administration office, located at 37 Green St., will still offer these permits, should one need to pull additional building or mechanical permits at the same time. The intention is to make the city's fire prevention resources more available to the public and to increase the efficiency of the permitting process, Aspell writes. For questions about the fire prevention permitting process, please call the Concord Fire Department headquarters at 225-8651.

Hearty recognition

City earns accolades

Concord was recently named a “Heart Safe Community” by the New Hampshire Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, the New Hampshire Bureau of Public Health, and the American Heart Association, Aspell writes. The award was based on the presence of publicly provided emergency medical services, citizen CPR training, and the placement of automatic defibrillators throughout the community. Concord Fire Lieutenant Tim Robinson developed all of the documentation necessary for the city to receive this recognition.

Road postings online

The General Services Department will be posting load limit signs on certain roads, starting the week of March 5, Aspell writes, to protect them from damage by heavy trucks during the spring thaw. A list of streets that will be posted can be found at concordnh.gov, under Department Highlights on the General Services Department web page.

Bridge closure ahead

To complete a detailed bridge structure inspection, the Sewalls Falls Bridge will be closed to traffic during the week of March 5-9, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The bridge closure will allow staff and our consultant engineering team to evaluate the bridge structure. Variable message signs will be deployed alerting motorists to the closure and the need to seek alternate routes for the week. Any questions pertaining to the bridge closure can be directed to the Engineering Services Division at 225-8520.

Climbing the ladder

Firefighter promoted

Firefighter paramedic Mark Hebert, a 12-year veteran of the Concord Fire Department, was promoted to lieutenant last week, Aspell writes. Mark worked for many years on one of the busiest ambulances in the region at the Broadway station and has been a preceptor for more than 100 paramedic students over his career. He will now be a crew leader on Battalion 3.
