Here come the holidays!

Hello there, and welcome to the Concord Insider’s Guide to United Way Giving. In these pages, you’ll find everything you need to lend a hand to those in the community who are less fortunate this holiday season. With the help of the wonderful folks at Granite United Way, we’ve put together a wish list of items that are needed at dozens of various social service organizations around the county. Some of the requests are for things like Christmas toys for young people; others are for basic necessities, like food and toilet paper. It’s no secret that people are struggling right now and there’s a lot of need in our communities. The goal of this guide is to give the more fortunate among us a concrete idea of what’s needed and how they can help.

There are, of course, many more groups in the area that didn’t make this list. We want to help them, too. If you notice something didn’t make it to this guide, please let us know. We’ll publish any extra wish lists we get through Dec. 14, and we’ll update our site accordingly. Just follow the model you see in this guide (include the name, address, mission statement, items needed, the deadline for goods to be collected, and contact information) and send your list to news@theconcordinsider.com.

Because this issue goes out to all Concord Monitor subscribers, we suppose an introduction is in order. In the unlikely event you’re not familiar with the Concord Insider (we are pretty famous, if we do say so ourselves), here’s a quick primer: We’re a weekly publication put out by the Monitor that covers all things capital city. We’re not really newsy – we’ll leave that to our big sister – but we’ve got our fingers on the pulse of Concord. In short, we write about the community – its events, its people, and its quirks. The Insider has everything from police logs to reviews of local bands to news about bean suppers. We strive to be hip, fun and relevant. Our goal is to help give Concord a voice.

If you’ve got story ideas or suggestions on how we can make things better, we’re all ears. Feel free to e-mail me anytime at aaugustine@theconcordinsider. I’d love to hear what you have to say.
