NHTI keeps it green

NHTI is proud to announce that its newest building, Beverly D. Grappone Hall, has received LEED Silver certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a green building rating and certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council which provides firm guidelines for achieving design goals, establishes accountability for the design/construction team and creates a national benchmark for building performance.

The exterior walls of Grappone Hall feature a high-tech insulation system involving separate air and water barriers as well as more conventional materials.

The plumbing uses low-water-consumption fixtures such as dual flush toilets and low-flow sinks. Carbon dioxide monitors are employed to ensure indoor air quality, and occupancy sensors turn off lights when rooms are not in use.

Ten percent of the building materials used in Grappone Hall have recycled content. The same percentage was also extracted, processed and manufactured within 500 miles of the site, saving on fossil fuels used for transportation. In addition, three quarters of the construction waste was re-used or recycled rather than disposed of as trash.
