Hear ye! Hear ye! High fives all around for Katrina Dumas

Girls Inc. of New Hampshire's Capital Region Girls' Center ended the school year with its annual Girl of the Year celebration at the Green Street Community Center. This exciting event, which chooses one outstanding girl from among nine honored as a “Girl of the Month” over the past year, is looked upon by all of the girls, their parents and Girls Inc. of New Hampshire staff with great anticipation.

The Girl of the Year award is presented annually to the girl who best exemplifies vision and leadership, courage and perseverance, generosity and compassion and dedication and sincerity.

The winner is chosen by votes cast by peers, staff members and local advisory council members and is kept secret until the big night. For the next year, the Girl of the Year will attend special events, engage in public speaking, represent the agency, and most importantly act as a role model for the younger girls.

The Girl of the Year for 2009 is Katrina Dumas, who has been attending the Concord Girls' Center since first grade. Asked if she has noticed a difference in herself since starting at Girls Inc., Katrina told us, “Yes, I've really come out of my shell, and have made many new friends.”

Later this summer, Katrina will join seven other Girls Inc. of New Hampshire girls from the other centers on a trip to New York City where they will have a chance to take in the big city and visit our Girls Inc National Headquarters.
