Red River Theatres is pleased to announce the launch of Open Caption Wednesdays, a new weekly accessibility initiative that began on Wednesday, January 14. On Wednesdays, all screenings will feature open captions whenever caption files are available.
Open captioning displays on-screen text for dialogue and relevant non-dialogue sounds, visible to all audience members. These screenings may be especially beneficial for patrons who are D/deaf or hard of hearing, individuals learning English, neurodivergent viewers, and moviegoers who simply prefer to read along while watching a film.
“Open captions were part of the Red River experience before the pandemic, and we’re thrilled to relaunch this program as we continue working to make movies more accessible and welcoming for everyone in our community,” said Angie Lane, Executive Director of Red River Theatres.
Not all films are distributed with open caption files, and certain special events may be excluded. However, Red River anticipates that a wide range of first-run and repertory titles will be available with open captions each Wednesday. Weekly film titles and showtimes will be listed on Red River’s website.
For moviegoers who prefer screenings without open captions, open-captioned presentations will be limited to Wednesdays only.
Open Caption Wednesdays complement Red River Theatres’ existing accessibility offerings,
which include assistive listening devices and closed-captioning devices for select films.
By relaunching this program, Red River Theatres reaffirms its commitment to being a
community-centered, inclusive cinema, one where film brings people together and access is an essential part of the moviegoing experience.
