ABC News ran a report on various cities in the USA charging a tax of 3 to 5 cents on plastic and paper grocery bags. San Francisco bans plastic bags period. Ireland charges 33 cents per bag. Perhaps the city of Concord could consider a "bag" tax on plastic and paper grocery bags to help our library. The ulterior motive however is to get everyone to bring their own reusable bags to the grocery stores and thus reduce the plastic in our landfills. All grocery stores are selling reusable bags for a nominal price. Maybe the Concord city council should consider the idea. Why not at least discuss it?
Maybe, just maybe this could keep our libraries open if we used the revenue generated from the tax for that purpose. Those that don't recycle pay for it all to happen. If you think plastic bags are used only in grocery stores, think again. Visit Target, Walmart, Staples, Walgreen's, etc while you'r'e at it. Reducing the amount of plastic and paper bags in Concord will help ANY green initiative that the city has in mind.
I hope that somebody has the time to see this through and turn it into a detailed, hard proposal. The city has an energy and environment committee and a solid waste committee.
