Baseball clinic for kids to benefit CHAD

Fred's Fund a nonprofit organization for CHAD (Children's Hospital at Dartmouth Hitchcock) is hosting a youth baseball pitching and hitting clinic on Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The clinic will be held at the Concord Sports Center, 2 Whitney Road. Special guest instructors will include Ken Joyce, hitting coach and instructor for the Toronto Blue Jays; Mike MacDonald, pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels and Simon Williams, outfielder for the Kalamazoo Kings and prior member of the St. Louis Cardinals. CPR course

Learn to save lives

The Center For Health Promotion at Concord Hospital is offering a CPR course on Nov. 19 at 5:45 p.m. This program will teach you how to give CPR to an adult, child or infant and first aid basics for children. This program is designed for those who do not need a certification card. The cost is $35. To register, call 230-7300.

New Hampshire's turnpike

New Hampshire's first turnpike was not Interstate 93 or I-95; it was the Concord to Portsmouth Turnpike. In 1791 the Legislature authorized a committee to survey and layout a road from Concord to Durham Falls with a branch to Newmarket. Henry Gerrish, a committee member, was also a surveyor. His notes and route survey are in a file at the University of New Hampshire library, together with a sketch drawn to a scale of 200 rods to the inch.
