Wings of Knowledge begins on Oct. 7

On Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 6 p.m., in the Library Living Room, NHTI will present the first of its free public Wings of Knowledge lectures for the 2014-15 season: “A Life in Photography: An Exploration of Photographic Portraiture’s Intimate Moments,” with Gary Samson. Samson will discuss and present images from his 35-year career as a fine art photographer. He will also talk about the influence of other photographers on his portrait work, including Lotte Jacobi, Paul Strand, Julia Margret Cameron, Ulric Bourgeois and Arnold Newman. Samson will show large format black and white film work.

Launched in 2001-02, Wings of Knowledge is an annual series of cultural events presented by the college. All events are free and open to the public. The series supports and expands upon NHTI’s wide variety of academic offerings, and is another element in the college’s expanding community college mission.

Subsequent events in the series will include: Nov. 18 – Travel writer Dan Szczesny discusses hiking, Nepal, and yielding the right of way to yaks; Dec. 2 – Learn how the “Coffee with a Cop” program helps strengthen relationships between community members and the police with Chief James Sartell of Hollis; Feb. 24 – National Engineers Week, a program co-sponsored by the NHTI Architectural Engineering Technology Club; March 3 – Designer Lynn Szymanski presents a program on furniture made in New Hampshire; April 7 – Culture in Many Societies, an NHTI foreign student shares insights of home and culture; April 28 – Kevin Gardner will cover a few of the main topics of his book about New England stone walls, The Granite Kiss, touching on history, technique, stylistic development, and aesthetics.
