What's up in Wolfeboro?

Wolfeboro is primarily known as a summer town, and for good reason. It rests on the banks of Lake Winnipesaukee – what better place to kick back and enjoy the dog days? However, there is plenty going on in town all year round. Visiting in spring, just as the seasonal shops and museums start opening up, is the perfect way to take in Wolfeboro without all the hustle and bustle of tourist-stifled summer. Come along with us!

Lydia's Cafe

This tiny hole-in-the-wall had a variety of breakfast and lunch options, as well as a fully-stocked smoothie bar. We just had to try its signature sandwich, the “No Name” wrap. Who knew that homemade baked beans, avocado and cream cheese were such a winning combination?

Cotton Valley Trail

Wolfeboro has a bunch of parks and trails that are ready for action year-round. Cotton Valley Trail can be a nice nature walk once the snow’s gone, but if you visit while the ground’s still covered, it’s a perfect cross-country skiing trail as well.

Penny Candy Shop

Our motto for 2012: “Treat yo’ self!” So, a visit to the Penny Candy Shop was mandatory. The store owner’s name is indeed Penny, but there’s more to the shop than just the name. In fact, there’s an antique gumball machine that dispenses candy for merely one cent!
We’re more of a chocolate and peanut butter crowd, ourselves, and we didn’t hesitate to sink our teeth into one (or two) of their handmade peanut butter cups.

The Wright Museum

Don’t let the tank fool you! The Wright Museum is dedicated to American history from the years 1939 to 1945, so, sure, there are some World War II military vehicles (and they are pretty cool). But we were most impressed with the relics from the home front. Step into the wayback machine!

Kalled Gallery

Jewelry, art and more awaits visitors at the Kalled Gallery. We were drawn in by the sculptures and metal butterfly chairs outside, but there was even cooler stuff inside! It was a little too pricey for the Insider’s budget, but we still drooled over the handcrafted jewelry (which we could see being crafted on site, right behind the counter) and we couldn’t help but try on this freaky mask (which we promise we didn’t get drool in).

Wolfe's Tavern

Finish the day up at Wolfe’s Tavern, and you might just become part of the decor! Hearty folk who can handle their drafts can get a personalized mug up in the rafters. All you have to do is drink 100 beers! No, not at once, you actually have to drink one of each of the tavern’s 100 beer selections (the catch is you can only drink two per visit). Upon completing the 100th beer, hop up and give Maurice the Moose a smooch and the mug is yours! We didn’t quite make it to 100 in our one-day visit to Wolfeboro.

Of course, we couldn’t visit every single place Wolfeboro has to offer, so here’s a list of some other fun stuff to do.
* Check out the New Hampshire Boat Museum.
* Grab a White Mountain-themed candy bar at Winnipesaukee Chocolates
* Take a hike on Ellie’s Woodland Walk
* Take a swim in Lake Wentworth at Albee Beach
* Browse for cool music and hot threads at Stay Tuned
* Try a tasty breakfast treat at Crepes Ooh La La or the Yum Yum Shop
* See what you can do to get involved in your community by taking a course from Global Awareness, Local Action
