The late, great

She was born Sarah Thompson and died Countess Sarah Rumford, an impressive title for a Concord girl!

Thompson was the daughter of Benjamin Thompson, who fled to Europe in 1774 after he was suspected of sympathizing with the British. Benjamin Thompson lived an illustrious life, making scientific discoveries and socializing with the rich and famous. Among his most lasting inventions: an especially efficient fireplace. In Bavaria, he was given a title for his exemplary service as a scientific and military adviser; he chose the name Count Rumford, in tribute to his former home in Concord, then called Rumford.

That made Sarah “Countess Rumford.” More than just the daughter of a famous father, Sarah used her inheritance to better the city. She founded the Rolfe and Rumford Asylum, later called the Rolfe & Rumford Home – a residence for Concord girls whose families couldn't afford to raise or educate them. It continued as a group home until last year.
