The Community Players take on 'Godspell'

“Godspell” is about to cast its spiritual spell on another generation, as an ensemble multifaceted cast from the Community Players of Concord recycles this standby from the tail end of the Sixties (1970) to the tail end of this decade.

With a recycling symbol as a logo, a reclamation yard as a setting and an infectious spirit permeating the Concord City Auditorium, 2 Prince St., the players vow that this will be a “Godspell” like you've never seen before.

Set to a sparkling score by Stephen Schwartz (who later went on to score “Pippin,” “Pocahontas,” “Wicked” and “Enchanted”), the audience will be treated to such familiar songs as “Day by Day.” A lyric from a new song in the show says “We can build a beautiful city, yes we can, yes we can.” No politics intended, and we might add, no cynics allowed.

Performances will be held Nov. 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $17, $14 for children younger than 18 and seniors older than 65. For tickets, call 224-4905 or visit communityplayersofconcord.org.

“Godspell” is a reminder that community and compassion still trump isolation and hatred. To explore the way Jesus and the Gospel is depicted on stage and in film over time, the players will be hosting a discussion in the Concord City Auditorium lobby with the both religious and theatrical community led by Robert Stiefel, a former Episcopal priest and pinity scholar who now directs the University of New Hampshire's fellowship office.

The discussion will be held on Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. This is a free program, but please reserve a spot in advance by calling 224-4905.
