Summer jobs open

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell gets out his shovel, goes out in his yard and digs us up a city memo. Why he buried them out there, we have no idea. Pop open that treasure chest and take a peek . . . can you dig it?

The recreation department is currently accepting applications for summer camp staff, lifeguards, water safety instructors, and tennis instructors, Aspell writes.

The minimum age to be a lifeguard is 15 years of age. Camp counselors and tennis instructors must be at least 17. Some of these positions require certification in adult, child and infant CPR; first aid; and/or lifeguard and Water Safety Instruction. Contact the Red Cross at 225-6698 for information about becoming certified. Interviews will begin in early April with jobs starting in mid- June and running through mid-August. Applications may be completed on-line at concordnh.gov/online/personnel/jobapplwelcome.asp or obtained from the recreation office located at White Park.

Quite a following

Over the past few months, Aspell writes, the traffic enforcement unit of the Concord Police Department has seen an increase in violations of RSA 265:25 – Following Too Closely. RSA 265:25 requires that “the driver of a vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon and the condition of the way.”

These types of violations have led to several traffic collisions, road rage complaints and, in one case, an assault, Aspell writes. Following a vehicle too closely can also be referred to as “tailgating.” Tailgating is an aggressive driving behavior that can easily be mistaken for road rage. Most rear end collisions are caused by the vehicle in back following too closely. If someone is tailgating you, move to another lane or pull off the road as soon as possible in order to allow the vehicle to pass.

City services guide

An updated “Residents Guide to City Services” has been placed on the city's web site at concordnh.gov, under the City Highlights section, Aspell writes. It is our hope that this document will provide answers and/or guidance on where to inquire about municipal services. Comments and suggested changes are welcome and appreciated. Please send inquiries or suggestions to improve this document to cityclerk@concordnh.gov.

New traffic lights

A winning bid has been accepted for installing a new traffic light at the intersection of Clinton Street and Langley Parkway. Weather permitting, construction of signal pole foundations and underground conduit will commence next week with minimal traffic delays anticipated, Aspell writes.

Sewer improvements

Continental Paving is set to resume renovating the sewer infrastructure on North State Street, Aspell writes. The work will take place between Dolan Street and Hillcrest Avenue, so expect one-lane traffic conditions there on a daily basis.
