Soldier to share book at NHTI on Oct. 22

When Andrew O’Brien returned from Iraq in 2009, he suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a condition which eventually led to a suicide attempt. When he woke up in a hospital and realized his attempt had failed, he felt “a profound gratitude” and “a determination to do whatever he could to help other soldiers suffering the same way.”

This led to the publication of O’Brien’s first book, Welcoming Your Soldier Home, a guide for families on how to handle PTSD

Since the book’s release in February 2013, O’Brien has spoken across the country and been featured on many media outlets including ABC, NBC and FOX News. He has been awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the Army, and a Certificate of Special Recognition by the House of Representatives.

O’Brien will speak in NHTI’s Sweeney Auditorium on Wednesday, Oct. 22, from noon to 2 p.m. Topics will include understanding PTSD, preventing military suicides and integrating veterans into the workplace. There will be a reception from 2 to 3 p.m. O’Brien’s appearance is sponsored by the NHTI Veterans Club. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.
