On Thursday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. the McLane Audubon Center will host Iain MacLeod as he presents a captivating program about ospreys.
MacLeod will describe Project OspreyTrack, a multiyear project using GPS trackers to follow these fish eating raptors from their nests in New Hampshire to their wintering grounds in South America. This type of tracking enables researchers to learn about the foraging behaviors of these birds as well.
MacLeod will share amazing and sometimes tragic stories of N.H. ospreys including one male who traveled 5,000 miles from its nest in Bridgewater to a winter territory in Brazil then returned to New Hampshire to be greeted by a film crew and reporters.
The program will also include an up-close encounter with a live osprey. MacLeod is executive director of the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness. He has studied ospreys in New Hampshire for more than 30 years and is a member of the New Hampshire Bird Records Editorial Team and the New Hampshire Rare Birds Committee. MacLeod worked with N.H. Audubon for 18 years.
This program is part of N.H. Audubon’s centennial events and the “Welcome Back” series which features the work of former staff and volunteers from New Hampshire Audubon.
