According to Wikipedia, the source we all use to fact check weird and interesting tidbits, 28 of the 50 states in America have an official state beverage.
Of those 28, 20 list milk as one of, or the sole, beverage for their states. But only one has apple cider next to its name and you better believe that New Hampshire is the one.
Thanks to a group of students from Jaffrey Grade School, HB 1206 requesting that apple cider become the state beverage for the Granite State passed both the House and Senate and was signed by Gov. John Lynch back in 2010.
It was a battle between the pressed fruit and cow juice, but in the end, cider reigned supreme. And how could it not?
It seems like there’s an apple orchard in every community and each fall people look forward to the moment when they can pick up the first gallon of cider. It’s so delicious when it’s fresh off the press. So why not make it official? And we can only assume that’s what those elementary school students must have thought.
Not only did they help write the bill, but they also testified on its behalf. Concord’s own Chuck Souther also chimed in his support for the drink he’s been making at his Mountain Road farm for almost 20 years.
While cider is only around from the fall through spring, it’s freezable, so you can enjoy it year round. And how can you go wrong with an official drink that also can be used to make donuts? The answer is you can’t.
