Pluto: Urasawa X Tezuka

Naoki Urasawa and
Osamu Tezuka

2008-2010

Fiction

This eight-volume graphic novel set, new at Concord Public Library, is a masterpiece of fiction and visual storytelling. Written and drawn by Naoki Urasawa (of Monster fame), this sci-fi tale is in turn loosely based on an Astro Boy story penned by Osamu Tezuka, widely known as the father of manga.

In a near future where man and machine are no longer so different, prejudices run high and what it means to truly be alive and feel are in question. The story follows the investigations of Inspector Gesicht, Europol’s top detective – and one of the most advanced robots on Earth.

Drawn into a strange web of mystery and conspiracy, Gesicht must find out who is tracking down and murdering the world’s seven most advanced robots – a list he himself is on, all the while struggling with misplaced memories and strange dreams.

If you are a sci-fi fan, don’t be daunted by the unfamiliar format of graphic novel. If you’re a graphic novel fan, don’t miss this essential series. If you’re just a fan of a good story, pick it up!

Additional note: The library is ordering Urasawa’s psychological thriller Monster. Keep an eye out!
