Concord Doomsday must-haves

The most important thing after the apocalypse, of course, is to repopulate the earth. This book, which we found at Gibson’s Bookstore, should provide you with all the instructions you need to get that party started. Doomsday doesn’t sound too bad after all!

The best place to ride out the apocalypse would obviously be some sort of fallout shelter. However, times are tight and most people can’t afford to build a bug-in bunker in their basement. We stopped by Pitchfork Records and found the next best thing. Simply play the Rolling Stones documentary “Gimme Shelter” on mute while listening to this Fall Out Boy album. Amazingly enough, they sync up perfectly and should protect you from any harm.

One thing on a lot of people’s doomsday preparation lists is seeds. Once the whole apocalypse thing blows over, you’ll need to plant some crops to sustain life on Earth. We found these sunflower seeds at Red and Gold – can’t wait to harvest a bumper crop of ranch-flavored sunflowers!

Paper money will be worthless in a post-apocalyptic scenario. Many believe that the world would revert to the gold standard if the finance world as we know it collapsed. With that in mind, we stopped by Granite State Candy Shoppe and stocked up on these gold coins. The exchange rate must be great right now; this handful is only a few American dollars’ worth of gold.

Liquor and guns are two big items for doomsday preppers. We stopped by the state liquor store on Storrs Street and found we could check both of those things off of our list at once. Grab a couple zoot suits to go along with this and you can have your own little boardwalk empire on 12/22/12.

Plenty of food and water should be a given. When it comes to food, you’re going want something that will last for a long time – no perishables. We found this dehydrated astronaut ice cream at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center gift shop. They also had plenty of dehydrated astronaut water lying around – just add water! (Okay, those may have been cups.)

The Mayan calendar is set to expire on Dec. 21. Many believe that spells the end of the world as we know it. Some hardy souls, though, should survive whatever we've got coming – so we put together this handy guide.
