City briefly

Coming Soon!
New parking kiosks

On pages 8 and 9, we asked bartenders about their signature drinks and best overheard pickup lines. We wanted to ask City Manager Tom Aspell those same questions, but he was busy memo writing.

But in our imagination, the answers are: kamikaze shots and “Hey, aren’t you Tom Aspell?”
In the memo, Tom wrote that the city recently received 70 “pay and display” parking kiosks. According to Tom, installation began last Thursday, and he anticipates having all the kiosks installed early this week.

Don’t expect to use them quite yet. “After the installation is complete, we will begin a short testing period, which will include training of internal staff on the meter operations, as well as completing procedural development,” Tom wrote.

The next step in The Great Kiosk Switch of 2010 will be to install signs for the kiosks, which will begin in two weeks. Tom anticipates having the machines in service in the Firehouse Block and Durgin Parking Garage by Aug. 23.

“This limited opening will allow any unanticipated issues to be worked out prior to the on-street start date of Aug. 30.”

Tom reminded us that the meter rates in the garages will remain at 50 cents per hour, while on-street rates will increase to 75 cents per hour.

Waaaah . . .
But we just bought a new bathingsuit!

The bad news is: Concord’s seven swimming pools are scheduled to close on Aug. 12.
The (sorta) good news is: It’s in your hands to help prolong the swimming season. The recreation department is accepting donations to keep one pool open longer. According to Tom, the goal is to raise $2,500 by Aug. 6 to keep Rollins Park Pool open until Aug. 19.

To make a donation, visit concordnh.gov/recreation or call 225-8690.

Rock out at Rollins Park and Eagle Square

Since you’ll now be saving all your cash to swim at Rollins Park for one extra week, find peace in the fact that you can listen to some free music courtesy of the summer music series.
On Aug. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m., The Wannabees will be jammin’ at Rollins Park. Then, on Aug. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m., catch the Restless Campbells at Eagle Square.

The concerts are free and open to the public. However, if you want to give a donation – no one is going to stop you.
