City briefly

Right behind turkey and our health, City Manager Tom Aspell’s weekly memo tops our list of things we’re most thankful for this Thanksgiving. We’ve collected the highlights so you can be just as grateful.

Tom takes time off

City Hall will be closed Thursday and Friday in observance of Thanksgiving.
How inconvenient! Instead of spending time with family, we were hoping to hang out at City Hall all day Thursday. Mom and Dad, we guess we’re coming home after all.

No recycling and trash on turkey day

City Hall folks the only ones not working on Thursday. According to Tom’s memo, there will be no trash or recycling collection on Thanksgiving. Instead, Thursday’s route will be picked up on Friday and Friday’s route will be picked up on Saturday. The transfer station will be closed on Thursday as well.

“Please note that Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday routes will be as scheduled,” Tom wrote. “Place trash at the curb by 7 a.m.”

Noted.

North State update

Just about every week in his memo, Tom keeps us abreast of the North State Street project. Usually his updates are the same: North State Street is being worked on, blah blah blah, expect delays, blah blah blah.

Tom wrote that the road box excavation is complete for the season on the North State Street corridor. This week, the crew will work on installation of vertical granite curbing. And here’s the kicker: One-lane traffic conditions will persist.

But wait, there’s more!

“The contractor will be working only through Wednesday and will observe the Thursday/Friday Thanksgiving holiday,” Tom wrote.

There will be no delays on Thursday and Friday! To celebrate, we’re going to drive up and down the street at least 15 times each day. You know you want to, too.

Goodbye, old meters

“The parking unit completed removing all the single space meter poles from the downtown kiosk area on Nov. 16,” Tom wrote. “Approximately 175 poles were removed from this area during the project.”

We wonder what they are doing with all the old poles. We wanted one for our cubicle to discourage chatty coworkers from distracting us. Park yourself near our cube, pay a quarter.

Maybe this will teach people how busy and important we are. YouTube videos aren’t going to watch themselves, you know.

Anyway, we digress.

“With these poles gone, the downtown streetscape is improved and we anticipate a higher level of service with snow removal as General Services will not have to contend with meter poles,” Tom added.

Get rid of those leaves

We know what you’re doing next Saturday!

Tom wrote that during fall clean up, Fort Eddy Road Reprocessing will be open on Dec. 4 and 11 to take residents’ leaves.

“Residents are reminded that they can drop them off free of charge, but they will have to empty the leaves out of bags when they get there,” Tom warned.
