City briefly

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell buys dozens of boxes of raisins and eats them all hurriedly, filling the empty boxes with shredded bits of the city memo for trick or treaters. He quickly becomes known as the raisin box guy, though, and everyone stays away. So he glumly tosses the treats in the yard. We gathered them and taped them together.

A few steps forward
Mmmm, bacon
The repairs to the entrance of City Hall are nearing completion, Aspell writes. This past week, the contractor finished installing and caulking the granite steps, and installed and rewired the light poles, rather than caulking the light poles and rewiring the steps. Early this week, the contractor will begin to remove the temporary fencing and the concrete barricades. It is anticipated that the entrance will be available for the public to use toward the middle of this week when the caulking has fully cured, along with the bacon.

Take a hike, dude
No, really, it’ll be fun
The New Hampshire Audubon Society, Five Rivers Conservation Trust, and the Concord Conservation Commission are hosting a hike along the West End Farm Trail on Nov. 2, Aspell writes. The trail is approximately 7 miles long, or 6.9 miles longer than our most recent hike, beginning at New Hampshire Audubon’s McLane Center and continuing through woods and fields to Carter Hill Orchard. You could also choose the path that goes over the river and through the woods, but only if you are planning on visiting grandma.
Naturalists will lead the group from the McLane Center at 9 a.m. to Dimond Hill Farm, naturally. From Dimond Hill Farm, the group will continue to the orchard, where naturalists will be on hand for live raptor demonstrations beginning at 12:30 p.m. Not included: any Toronto Raptors.
Shuttles will be available at Dimond Hill Farm (3 miles) and Carter Hill Orchard (7 miles) to transport hikers back to their vehicles. Please RSVP to jpifer@5rct.org.

Gather ‘round
Learn about stuff
The Penacook Village Association is hosting a meeting Nov. 2 at 9 a.m. at the Penacook Elementary School, Aspell writes. Engineering Division staff will provide an update on the Route 3 corridor improvement project, complete with shoebox dioramas and Lego figurines, including progress on the utility infrastructure and bridge repairs, as well as the status of the final design for the streetscape improvement project scheduled for 2014. Any good streetscape should always be working to improve itself. The public is encouraged to attend.
