Back Roads And Byways comes to McGowan

McGowan Fine Art is pleased to announce the opening of Back Roads And Byways: New Landscapes, featuring the oil paintings of Susan Abbott. The show will run from Oct. 7 to Nov. 14, with a reception on Oct. 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.

Susan Abbott’s paintings in this, her first solo exhibit at McGowan Fine Art, present a fresh, moving, and colorful vision of the New England landscape.

Abbott re-imagines the usual way we see New England, unlike many painters who focus on more typical pastoral subjects. She finds unexpected beauty in a lived-in landscape of aging summer camps, drive-in motels, small town intersections, and off-season seaside resorts. Boats are pictured in their owner’s yards awaiting repairs, rather than in their usual painted place in a picturesque harbor.

As with Edward Hopper’s work, no figures appear in Abbott’s landscapes, but the human presence is felt everywhere. Pickup trucks often appear, and seem full of the personality of their owners. A
Abbott’s new paintings show an adept sense of color and design. Sometimes vibrant, sometimes subtle, her color compositions help transform the ordinary into the fresh and unexpected.
