Audubon to offer Nature Day Camps this summer

Have your kids ever thought about how nature recycles? Do they ask where our water comes from? Do they wonder how plants and animals survive harsh weather or food shortages? If so, N.H. Audubon has those answers and many more as its Nature Day Camps program kicks off for 2014. Offering six sessions beginning this week and running through the week of Aug. 11 for children ages 4 through 15, N.H. Audubon summer day camps will cultivate in participants an appreciation for our natural environment and enhance ecological awareness while providing fun and safe hands-on learning opportunities.

Day camps will take place at both the McLane Center (84 Silk Farm Road) and the Massabesic Audubon Center in Auburn.

Camps are pided by age categories as follows: Wonders Camp (ages 4–5); Discovery Camp (ages 6–9); Explorers Camp (ages 10–12); and the Leaders-In-Training Program (ages 13–15).

Weeklong camp session themes include History’s Mysteries; Native and Natural Ways; Winged Wonders; Wilderness Ways (also known as Survival Week); Water Wizards; and Earth Heroes. A typical camp day might include meeting live animals and heading out into the woods to discover their relatives in the wild; playing games designed to enhance knowledge of the natural world and build a sense of team; creating crafts using natural materials; and venturing out on short hikes.

Extended care will also be offered with supervised play time available before (from 7:45 a.m.) and after (up to 5:30 p.m.) regular camp hours for an additional fee. Pre-register for a full session or use extended care on a “pay-as-you-go” basis. Afternoon extended care is not available for Wonders campers.
