Ask the Tweens: Cold weather gear

Dear Tweens, Why do middle school students walk to school without proper gear for the cold weather? I have seen kids walking without hats or mittens, coats not zipped, very short skirts and even flip flops!

I think that people don't wear their coats and stuff because of what looks nice or not. For example, girls probably wear skirts and flip-flops to school in the winter because it looks nice. I personally don't think you should do that. There are cute jeans, boots and sweaters that you can wear during the winter and save the skirts, flip-flops and tank tops for summer. Although I understand not wearing big puffy winter jackets, you should. You can take them off as soon as you get inside. There are some nice stylish coats, too.

I have experience with that because in the winter of 2006, I usually wore shorts and high socks and now I know it's stupid, but I wanted to look cool. Sometimes kids don't have long pants and jackets because their families are poor. Some kids choose the look because it is cool. Kids don't wear hats and mittens because they want to show off their hair style or the girls like to show off their nail polish.

I think a lot of kids have different body temperatures than old people. Young people stay warmer because we move more and are active. My friend, Dior Chisholm, says that she wears her white flip-flops because they match her outfits better and she doesn't really get cold when she knows she looks good. She says that the girls don't zip up their coats so their friends can see what shirt they are wearing underneath. For Dior, it is all about the fashion.

I walk to school most days and I wear a big poofy orange down jacket, gloves and a hat. I don't really know why people don't wear warm clothing – it might be because some lockers are small, but somehow I can fit a big jacket, gloves, a hat, a dance bag and a gym bag into mine. Also, it could be that some jackets aren't “stylish,” but if you shop at stores like Aeropostale, you can find some really cute jackets and pants. Kids really should be dressing more warmly when they walk to school.

I, myself, walk to school. And it is true that I don't wear any wintry stuff. I think it is because I personally don't like wearing puffy jackets and hats or mittens, but small lockers are problems, too. At school, I have so many things to put in my locker like my huge backpack, gym bag and a lot of binders. It is impossible to fit all the wintry stuff in my tiny locker. We need bigger lockers!!
