The Concord Public Library

onconcord.com/library

April 12-18 is National Library Week, a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country since 1958. It is a time to celebrate libraries, librarians and library workers across the country. This year’s theme is “worlds connect at your library.” We hope you can come and help us celebrate by participating in some of the library events we have planned.
– April 13 at 7 p.m: “Mysteries on Both Sides of the Pond” book discussion with professor Suzanne Brown. We will be discussing “St. Alban’s Fire” by Archer Mayor. Books are available to check out at the circulation desk.
– April 14 from 9-11 a.m: Public coffee hosted by the Concord Public Library Foundation.
– April 15 at 7 p.m: “Banjos, Bones and Ballads,” a music program with Jeff Warner. Traditional songs, rich in local history and a sense of place, present the latest news from the distant past. They help us to interpret present-day life with an understanding of the working people who built our country. Tavern songs, banjo tunes, 18th-century New England hymns, sailor songs and humorous stories about traditional singers and their songs highlight this informative program.
All week on the main floor: Join the staff in creating a tapestry. In the spirit of National Library Week’s theme, together we will weave a symbol of the connections between all of us in our community. No special talent required – just stop by and be part of the project!

On April 9 at 6:30 p.m., join us for “The Gifts of Dementia: A Positive Approach to Caregiving.” The journey through Alzheimer’s disease can feel like a daily struggle as the disease slowly steals a loved one away, leaving family caregivers feeling frustrated and powerless. It is not surprising that so many caregivers struggle with depression and other stress-related illnesses. Although memory-impairing illnesses take away a great deal, they also give many gifts if we are able to see them. This program will offer tips for dealing with the emotional challenges of caregiving. Guest speaker is Sheila King, president and CEO of Community Services Council of New Hampshire.
Presentation will be followed by a panel discussion on the benefits of adult daycare, costs, payment sources and other topics of interest.
Respite care will be provided by the Beacon Landing staff; advance reservations are required to ensure adequate staff is available. Call 225-9694, ext. 232, to reserve your spot.

Community Action Program Belknap-Merrimack Counties
2 Industrial Park Drive
225-3295

Are you 55 or older, a year- round New Hampshire resident and living on a low or limited income? Are you worried about your prospects for employment? Would you like to receive job training and get paid while you learn? If you answered yes to these questions, you are an ideal candidate for the senior community employment program, a nonprofit program at the Community Action Program Belknap-Merrimack Counties.
SCSEP enables qualified inpiduals to obtain paid, on-the-job training within their communities, update their job skills to enhance their marketability, develop new aptitudes and gain greater self-confidence. SCSEP participants work 20 hours per week earning $7.25 per hour in a nonprofit organization or government entities, and receive help in transitioning from the program into a new, unsubsidized employment opportunity. These wages do not interfere with food stamps or subsidized housing programs.
If you are interested and living in Belknap, Merrimack or Rockingham counties, give us a call and ask for Gervaise from the senior community service employment program.
