Parking garage repairs to begin

The city’s $4.6 million repair of the School Street Parking Garage will begin on Monday. The garage will be open for business during construction; however, rolling sporadic closures of a limited quantity of parking spaces will be required constantly to complete the work. The project is scheduled to take approximately 2½ years to complete.

In addition to extensive steel and concrete repairs, renovations will also include new fully enclosed stair towers, a new elevator, improved LED lighting, a surveillance system, as well as updated interior and exterior signage. This will be the first comprehensive renovation of the garage since it opened in 1985.

Concord YMCA CEO recently honored

Eastern Bank recently honored James Doremus with the bank’s 2017 Community Advocacy Award, which recognizes people who have given their time and talent to address a vital need in their community.

Doremus, CEO of the Concord Family YMCA, was recognized for his devoted efforts of implementing critical support in response to the growing refugee population in Concord, which has the highest immigrant population in the state of New Hampshire.

In recent years, the Concord Family YMCA has introduced initiatives dedicated to helping new American children become acclimated to the Concord area. Through partnerships with Broken Ground Elementary School and Ascentria Care Alliance, immigrant children were provided transportation so they could attend Camp Mowkawogan over the summer.

Doremus, who joined the Concord YMCA in 2009, has worked in the nonprofit, social services sector for more than 30 years. He has served on numerous boards, including Riverbend Community Mental Health and Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce, in addition to board and leadership roles connected to the YMCA.
