Check out a band or performance this week

There’s a lot going on these days in the Concord entertainment world, so we figured why not put together a list of some options to get you through the week?

As always, use this as an outline, because there will most certainly be more going on than what we found.

The Audi

On Friday at 7:30 p.m., the Walker Lecture Fund Concert series features the Freese Brothers Big Band.

A local tradition and audience favorite, this “swinging” swing band returns to the Concord City Auditorium stage to open the 121st Walker season.

All Walker programs are free and open to all.

Open seating, no tickets needed. Doors open at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m., Opera N.H.: N.H. Opera Idol Competition takes over the Audi stage.

In a perfect day for opera lovers, 40 young singers perform in daytime preliminaries (free and open to all). Finalists appear in the evening concert to vie for $4,000 in cash and contract awards. Evening tickets are $25 at the door.

Hatbox Theatre

The Final Reel by William Ivers and Walter Freeman is on its final week at Hatbox Theatre.

In this original production (and public theatre world premiere), Ghost Encounters, a paranormal reality show, has arrived at a mansion on the coast of Maine to investigate rumors of a haunting. The subject, Jackie Leman, best known for her silver screen persona, Dolly Dancer. She once sought refuge in the mansion, but on one fateful night, Ms. Leman cast herself from the balcony into the raging seas below. While the producers of Ghost Encounters are seeking a ratings bonanza, the late Ms. Leman has decided she is ready for her final reel and provides our intrepid investigators with something they have never previously encountered – an actual haunting.

Shows are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Capitol Center for the Arts

Living comedy legend John Cleese is heading to the Capitol Center for the Arts on Wednesday for a live and truly unforgettable evening of conversation and audience Q&A.

Absurd and/or ridiculous questions only are requested, please. John will tell stories of his life and career, and you just may finally find out the air speed of an unladen swallow. Before John “silly walks” his way onto the stage, the excitement will build as the audience gets to watch Monty Python and the Holy Grail in its entirety on the Chubb Theatre big screen.

Tickets start at $59.50.

On Friday, Sister Hazel will take the Capitol Center stage to benefit the Frank Monahan Foundation.

Originating from Gainesville, Fla., Sister Hazel is composed of five gifted, seasoned musicians whose natural talent has been called “one of the Top 100 Most Influential Independent Performers of the last 15 years” by Performing Songwriter Magazine. Their song “All for You” topped the adult alternative charts during the summer of 1997 and the success propelled their album to platinum status.

Tickets start at $30.

Ben Sollee and Kentucky Native will cap off the weekend with a performance on Saturday in the Spotlight Cafe.
