If you have kids in your life who love the outdoors – and fish – then there’s a perfect event for them coming up this Saturday: Youth Fishing Day.

The event, put on by Basil Woods Trout Unlimited, will take place at Merrill Park Pond, right next to Quality Cash Market on Eastman Street, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. And it’s free.

As its name implies, this is a day all about getting kids into fishing. There will be rods, tackle, bait (do you know the difference?), food and “legendary” instructors available for kids up to age 16. (Kids 10 and under should be accompanied by an adult.)

The pond is freshly stocked with 300 hungry brook trout, and you’ll get to keep up to two fish, if you’re lucky enough to catch any (which, with numbers like that, shouldn’t be too hard).

Organizers don’t want to compete with Discover WILD NH Day – which takes place the same day at about the same time – but rather have the two events complement one another. This pond is only a 6-minute drive from Fish and Game, so hit up both events in the same day!
