The Last One

Alexandra Oliva

2016, 304 pages

Genre: Thriller (Fiction)

The 12 contestants on a new reality show set in the woods of the East Coast signed up to test the limits of their endurance, and each challenge that the producers set seems more insurmountable than the last. Contestant Zoo is trying to make up time after becoming sick on the trail when she stumbles across a horrific scene. Is it just something the producers have thrown in her path to trip her up, or is it real? In order to save herself, Zoo must travel across unfamiliar territory in an attempt to make her way home, and to the life she left behind.

The Last One is an uncommon thriller with a strong story and a great heroine. Zoo is memorable and likeable as a reality show contestant who has to deal with the fact that her “show” experience has turned into actual reality. Even as she encounters more and more situations that strain the boundaries of what reality shows can do, her belief that “it’s all part of the show” is what keeps her sane and functioning.

This is a very enjoyable thriller and a great vacation read.
