Go Try It: Help Concord add to its total

Typically, when we tell you to go out and try something, we’ve done it ourselves. We like to have an idea of what kind of situation we’re sending our readers into because without all of you guys, where would that leave us?

But we feel pretty comfortable about the fact that while we’ve never participated in the Concord Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, it’s totally something that you should go try.

In case you didn’t notice, this is our annual Making Strides issue, so starting on page 15, there’s all kinds of great info about the event, stories of hope from team leaders and profiles of breast cancer survivors. It’s definitely worth a read.

But this is our shameless plug to urge you to be a part of it. There’s no fee to walk on Sunday. All you have to do is show up, preferably wearing some pink with a comfortable pair of walking shoes, and wind your way through the three-mile course with thousands of cancer survivors, those battling the disease right now and the people who have supported them on their cancer journey.

While there isn’t a fee, a donation – of really any amount – would be a nice thing to do. So that means even if you can’t make it on Sunday, like us, you can still help add to the bottom line.

Concord is kind of a big deal when it comes to Making Strides fundraising. It has owned the highest per capita dollar amount for the last eight years and we say why not go ahead and make it nine straight.

Since the very first walk in 1993, more than $7 million has been in Concord alone. Talk about doing your part.

And since we won’t be there on Sunday, we decided to add a little to the Monitor team total. For many years the Monitor has put in a team and this year there will be a squad of employees, significant others, children and friends marching along with all the other Making Strides supporters.

It’s going to be one of those events that you’ll be telling your friends about for days, weeks and months to come. We’re sure bummed we can’t make it.

So if you’re free on Sunday, head over to Memorial Field and don’t forget to bring a few walking pals. If you can’t, think about making a donation, from the change in your car to what you planned on dropping on that new flat screen.

Happy walking!
