Leaf collection begins this week

The city of Concord’s spring leaf collection began Monday, and will continue through June 4 (excluding weekends). Concord residents with curbside trash and recycling collection can place an unlimited amount of leaves and grass clippings curbside by 7 a.m. on their trash collection day for disposal. Residents participating in spring leaf collection must use biodegradable yard waste bags or labeled rigid containers.

Concord residents who do not have curbside trash and recycling collection, or who wish to take care of their own leaves, may bring their leaves to Earth Materials Recycling Center for free (with proof of residency) if the load is smaller than a non-commercial pick-up truck.

Earth Materials Recycling Center’s new hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays during spring leaf collection. Hours are weather dependent and are subject to change; please call ahead to confirm specific drop-off times at 545-4835.

Visit concordnh.gov/ leafcollection for more information and for Concord General Services’ instructional video on spring leaf collection.

Noisy Narwhals make finals

After achieving first place honors for creativity, teamwork and innovation in both the regional and state academic tournaments, the Noisy Narwhals, a team of fifth graders from Bow Middle School, have earned the right to compete in Destination Imagination’s Global Finals, the world’s largest celebration of student creativity, to be held May 25-28 in Knoxville, Tenn. Team members include Madison Kiniry, Jacob McDaniel, Grace Neff, Emily Vincent and Meaghan Wray.

They will compete with other teams in the Improvisational Challenge, one of seven, open-ended challenges that blend STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education with the arts and social entrepreneurship.

“The team worked hard all season learning improv techniques, how to think on their feet, and support each other in the process,” said first-time team manager Mark Vincent.

To help the team raise the funds needed to travel to Knoxville to compete, they have set up a GoFundMe site: gofundme.com/8xxh7mzw (Noisy Narwhals – Global Finals 2016) to collect donations to cover travel, registration, food and lodging expenses.

The Noisy Narwhals is one of two teams from Bow that will advance to global finals.

Big donation for library renovation

At its April 1 Rotary meeting, the Rotary Club of Bow presented a check for $20,000 to the Baker Free Library Foundation and Baker Free Library Trustees in support of the Baker Free Library lower level renovation project.

The rotary club made their pledge to the project back in 2013, and decided to make their payment to the project in full once the last installment of town appropriations were approved at town meeting in March. The rotary club hopes that others in the Bow community will come forward to help raise the last 10 percent needed.

The library’s lower level renovation project is funded through both public and private money with $300,000 raised through town appropriation between 2014 and 2016, and $300,000 privately raised. With less than $60,000 left to raise privately, the final phase of the lower level renovation project should begin in September.

For more information, visit the library’s website at bowbakerfreelibrary.org or call 224-7113.

Hydrant flushing on the city docket

Concord General Services’ highway and utilities division began flushing hydrants throughout Concord on April 18 and for the next several weeks, there will be three crews going out to scheduled areas to flush hydrants to remove any sediment from water distribution pipes.

This process will help to maintain Concord’s water quality and also check water pressure. Residents should avoid doing laundry when hydrant flushing is occurring in their area. Concord water consumers may experience low pressure and discolored water during their scheduled flushing time. If discoloration occurs, run your tap water on cold until the water runs clear.

There will be a new flushing schedule posted online each week to indicate impacted areas at concordnh.gov/springoperations, or follow Concord General Services on Facebook or Twitter, for the newest flushing schedule.
